Opinion Favours Harsher Sentences for Tool Thieves

According to a survey conducted by Direct Line Business Insurance.

A new survey conducted by Direct Line Business Insurance has revealed strong public support for tougher penalties for those who steal tools from vans. The data shows that 52% of people in the UK believe sentencing for tool theft is currently too lenient, while 82% agree that van theft should be treated as seriously as domestic burglary.

The findings also reflect growing concern over the rise in thefts affecting the UK’s self-employed tradespeople, contractors, and small businesses. According to the survey, 70% of tradespeople have experienced tool theft in the past two years, and 65% say the issue is getting worse year-on-year.

The survey further found that 74% of respondents believe tougher sentencing would act as a strong deterrent, sending a clear message that this type of crime will not be tolerated. More than two-thirds also support stricter controls on second-hand tool sales, especially at car boot sales and online marketplaces.

Tradespeople often bear the brunt of the crime both financially and emotionally. The average value of tools stolen in a single incident is estimated to be over £3,000, not including the cost of vehicle damage, loss of earnings, and disruption to customers.

In light of these findings, the demand for preventive solutions is rising. Innovations like Van Eye, which visually demonstrates that a van is empty before a thief decides to break in, are seen as an effective way to deter opportunistic theft.

As pressure grows on the government to act, industry leaders and security experts continue to urge tradespeople to use a combination of physical deterrents and technology to protect their businesses.

Unfortunately, tool theft is on the rise.

The best thing you can do is remove your tools when you’re not using them, but even then, a break-in still means damage, repairs, and time off the road.

Make sure they don’t bother trying in the first place.
